Local Color was established in 1997 in Novi, Michigan (a suburb of Detroit) under a parent company called Liquid Manufacturing. It occupied a three-story building, within which Local Color also distilled wine, vodka, gin, tequila, and brewed a top-rated root beer, and included a restaurant and brewpub. In 2004 Local Color closed the Novi location, in part due to poor wait service in the restaurant/brewpub, and in part due to cost of operation. They had planned to move to a cheaper location, and for a time their beers were brewed under contract by the Schmohz Brewery in Grand Rapids. However, they weren't able to complete the move and the brand was retired. Tomboy Red Lager was a thin, malted red lager that boasted of being "the best-looking beer on the market", but as Local Color discovered, looks aren't everything. Weighted average on ratebeer.com is 2.59 out of 5.
Since Local Color is out of business, there are no site links to post. This post should have appeared after Tap Handle #33 (Sun Dog), but I had to re-take the picture due to the original being far too blurry...
