Tap Handle #23: Lowenbrau - Lion on Barrel

This is a gorgeous and fun tap...who doesn't like a lion guzzling beer while sitting on a barrel? The lion is just as iconic for Lowenbrau as the bull is for Schlitz.

Lowenbrau Brewery is located in Munich, Bavaria, in Germany, and was probably founded some time around 1383. Lowenbrau means "lion's brew", and originates from a 17th-century fresco in the brewing house that depicts Daniel in the lion's den. In 1863 Lowenbrau was the largest brewery in Munich, producing 25% of the city's beer output, and by the turn of the century it was Germany's largest brewery. The brewery was destroyed in an Allied air raid in 1945, but in 1948 it was rebuilt and was exporting beer again. There are many varieties of beer produced by the brewery, as well as the brands Spaten and Becks. It is currently owned by Anheuser-Busch. Weighted average on ratebeer.com for Lowenbrau Original is 2.58 out of 5.
