Tap Handle #45: Abita - Andygator

This version of Andygator is very rare. Abita has redesigned all their taps and the new ones are nice, but not sculptural like this vintage Andygator.

Abita Brewing began brewing in 1986 in Abita Springs, Louisiana. Business boomed, and by 1994 they moved to a bigger facility (the old one was converted to a brewpub. They brew over 125,000 barrels and 20 varieties of beer per year (as well as root beer), which is sold in 46 states and Puerto Rico, making them the 24th largest brewery in the U.S. It is also served in Walt Disney World's Port Orleans Resort (I've stayed there!).

Andygator is part of Abita's "Big Beer" line. It is a Helles Dopplebock and is fermented to a dry finish. Recommended food pairings are fried foods, crawfish, and creamy cheeses. Weighted average on ratebeer.com is 2.91 out of 5, which is surprising, given that several comments describe it as "skunky" or "borderline malt liquor".
