Tap Handle #50: Castlemaine Boomerang and Koala

This whimsical tap is the first and only Australian entry. It does not identify the type of beer, so it is probably used for all varieties. It is now quite rare.

Castlemaine Perkins Brewery is located in Milton, Brisbane, Australia and is owned by the Japanese company Lion Nathan. It was founded in 1877 when brothers Nicolas and Edward Fitzgerald bought a failing distillery and turned it into a brewery. Tours of the brewery are said to be excellent and informative. With the brewery being located across from the Milton Train Station, trains have been promenently featured on Castlemaine packaging throughout the years. Their signature beer, XXXX Bitter, was introduced in 1924. It is described as an Australian lager with a crisp taste and bitter finish.
