Tap Handle #341: Green Man

A Green Man is a sculpture, drawing, or other representation of a face surrounded by or made from leaves. Commonly used as a decorative architectural ornament, Green Men are frequently found on carvings in churches and other buildings (both secular and ecclesiastical). This Green Man has a gold face surrounded by leaves. There are a few variations of this tap, including some that have the beer variety on the base in raised letters, and a rare brown and yellow version that is all wood and more ornate.

Green Man Brewing was founded in 1997 in Asheville, North Carolina by Joe Eckert. It was the brewing side of the Jack of the Wood brewpub, producing English-style ales, and was actually located in the pub. Eventually the brewery moved to its own location, where it added a tasting room. However, despite the fact that locals refer to the tasting room as "Dirty Jack's", due to its relationship with Jack of the Woods, Green Man and Jack of the Woods have always been separate businesses, each with its own owner. In 2010, Dennis Theis purchased the brewery and invested in new equipment, adding new tanks which allowed it to double production capacity. Theis had experience on the distribution side and worked part time at Highland Brewing before acquiring Green Man. The brewery currently produces 3 year round beers and 4 seasonals. I'll cover the Porter, which is their signature beer.

Green Man Porter is an English-style brown porter that has a red tint, and is full-bodied, and rich in flavor. It offers a creamy, smooth mouthfeel, and has mocha, carob, and chocolate flavors and coffee aromas with a slightly smoky and warming alcohol finish. Weighted average on ratebeer.com is 3.36 out of 5.
